PhD student position (m/f/d) Institute of Human Genetics
ST-18065 The Institute of Human Genetics invites applications for a PhD student position (m/f/d) (TV-L E13, 65%) The part-time position (25,025 h/week) is available from March 2025, for the full project duration of 3 years, with the possibility of extension. Ihre Aufgaben The position, which is affiliated with the working group “Immune Genetics” of Prof. Kerstin Ludwig, will focus on the identification of genetic factors contributing to LongCOVID. The term LongCOVID subsumes a variety of long-term consequences experienced by some people following infection with SARS-CoV-2. Its symptoms are highly heterogeneous, its causes are remain incompletely understood, and there are no specific biomarkers available, all of which prevents effective diagnosis and treatment. As part of the new project “genomLC”, which has recently started and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), we will elucidate the genetic architecture of LongCOVID and investigate whether genetic information can improve diagnostics, be used for the identification of specific subgroups. The successful candidate will be involved in different aspects of the project, including patient recruitment, systematic acquisition and evaluation of biomaterial and clinical data. The analysis of the generated genome sequence data as well as the interpretation of the identified genetic variants using state-of-the-art computational approaches will be a major focus of the project. Furthermore, the position involves access to and analysis of genomic data available in large international biobanks (e.g. UKBiobank, AllofUs). The Institute of Human Genetics Bonn is one of Germany’s leading centers in the identification of genetic risk factors for multifactorial disorders. Supported by the Excellence-Cluster “Immunosensation2” and the West German Genome Center, the successful candidate will benefit from a unique scientific environment in the areas of immunology, host genetics and computational genomics, with access to most up-to-date genomics technologies. - you have a master’s degree in a life-science related discipline (preferably computational biology, life-science informatics, data science)
- you have experience in data analysis and programming (e.g., R, Python)
- statistics knowledge and a background in immunology are a distinct advantage
- you have strong communication skills in English,
- first experiences presenting and publishing research findings are beneficial
